Ralph Smit is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and artist 

 

 

grew in the small kingdom of eSwatini, at a young age he was attracted to music and started collecting and playing traditional instruments of southern africa, whilst also creating on fruity loops in parallel which then led him to meet other musicians and finally settling on trumpet as his primary instrument 

 

bridging traditional, electronic and improvised music he played in many different projects in-between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Maputo and eSwatini, whilst facilitating and booking artists in his home country and engaged as a cultural organiser within the creative sector with a focus on experimental processes with a strong connection to environmental awareness and the natural world

 

studied under the late innovator Smiles Mandla Makama, to whom he was an apprentice in the construction of his instrument, the Smilerphone, as well as a member of his band and his manager 

 

won a number of awards for sound design, film scoring and dance. He has had solo and group exhibitions of photography and installations in eSwatini, France and South Africa as well as residencies in South Africa, Nepal and eSwatini

being part of numerous collectives he also started Rondavel Records which was a booking agent and record label that mainly served as his earlier releases.

​

currently studying composition pour l'image at the conservatoire de Marseille

 

toured Europe extensively with South African rapper Yugen Blakrok (Black Panther OST) 

 

performed and exhibited in venues such as Royal festival hall, London. Sziget festival, Budapest, Suicide Club, Berlin. Condition Public, Roubaix. Rote Fabrik, Zurich.
